Do clothing labels bother you so much that you have to remove them? Do you find many different foods repulsive? Do loud, sudden, or piercing sounds startle you? Do you need to wear sunglasses even on a cloudy day? Do you feel panicky going down an escalator or driving through a tunnel? If the answer to many of these questions is yes, you may suffer from sensory defensiveness, a common but often misdiagnosed condition that results from adverse reactions to what most people consider harmless sensations. Developmental psychologist Sharon Heller, sensory defensive herself, suggests that the best way for sufferers to cope is not psychotherapy or medication but a host of other treatments that tap into the primitive brain. As Heller explains, there is hope for the sensory defensive. This book will change your life.

Customer Rating: Summary: This book has had a huge impact on the way I view myself Comment: This is all new information to me, and incredibly welcome! I never knew there were others who simply couldn't function if the music was too loud, or who needed to sleep in a sleeping bag or with very heavy blankets. I sort of came across this by accident. It helps a lot to know there are physical reasons for these oddities - it's not just that I'm weak or inadequate because I can't cope with certain things. Plus the whole idea that I might be able to lessen these effects is intriguing!
Customer Rating: Summary: Sensory Understanding! Comment: This book is full of sensory information, but took me some time to get it all.
Customer Rating: Summary: Check this out! Comment: I found this book while looking for ADD information. I am so glad that I did. I just recently found out about Sensory Integration Dysfunction. This book is very informative in explaining how this disorder is woven into your life and how it plays out in different people. When reading it I found myself saying, "That sounds just like me". The language is a little hard to understand with some of the technical jargon but the sample stories to show how people live with this disorder are great and help the reader to understand what it means. This is overall a good book but I find it just a little to long. If it was more direct and more in layman's terms I would have found it to be better. All in all though, it is good for someone who needs more information on the disorder.
Customer Rating: Summary: This is unique Comment: There are many books about children with sensory processing disorders. This is the only one I have found that deals with adults who have grown up with it. The book is full of practical advice - actual steps one can take to manage sensory input. It's well organized and has a good resource section.
Customer Rating: Summary: great book Comment: I have a son that has autism. It is a must read because most of our kids either are under sensitive or over sensitive. This is a very easy to read book. It explains what the Occupational Therapists do with our kids.
