Summary: incomplete drug dictionary
Comment: though the people who have written this book have obviously done their homework and it is refreshing that they give you the facts rather that the 'just-say-no-dont-learn-just-do-what-we-say' propaganda, the claim that they are unbiased is somewhat decietful. most of the facts that are given about drugs are about their negative effects on the body, though this is helpful it still sends the message that drugs are simply bad for you no matter what without actually saying that.

Summary: TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the WORST reads of my life!
Comment: I bought this book reading that it is UNBIASED.... they then go to explain that "They want to educate people so people will make THEIR own decision... to say NO to drugs". That's BIASED!
I took a highlighter and highlighted everything in the book that I found that I felt was biased, or any sentence that they themselves would say.... "well we really don't know"..... My whole book looks yellow.
About as knowledgeable as you'd expect ANY non-drug user to be on the subject of drugs.
How bout' these sobrietists start writing things they know about....
Cuz, Drugs...... they don't know.
Utterly Useless, waste of ...... everything.... DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

Summary: Very up to date information
Comment: I bought this book for a University class that I am taking. It is packed with information. Some chapters are pretty scientific (especially the chapter on the brain). The authors do a good job, even for a scientifically challenged reader like myself. If you want to know the most current info on drugs, this is the book to pick up.

Summary: Interesting but could use more experiences
Comment: This is an interesting book. I read it because I also read From Chocolate to Morphine. This book provides a useful survey of a range of drugs, from alchohol to PCP. It provides a good overview of the effects of the various drugs, the problems that can result from taking them, what they impact in the body and how that changes over time, and studies about them. The information is recent (I read the 3rd edition), interesting, and easy to read.
The biggest down side to the book is I would have liked more descriptions of what it is like to use the drugs. There are occasional excerpts from William Burroughs for some of the drugs, but I found From Chocolate to Morphine much more descriptive about what the experiences are like, and I would have liked this book more if it incorporated more of the direct stories, such as one would find on erowid.

Comment: Excellent book- explained materials well, easy to read, straight to the point. Would recommend for anyone interested in the psychobiology of recreational drugs. I used the book for a course and it was very informative.
