Editorial Reviews for Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer

This year, an estimated 3,000 American men will die of prostate cancer, and more than 30,000 will be diagnosed with the disease. But with early diagnosis and better treatments, the medical establishment has made progress towards defeating this devastating illness. This invaluable guide covers every aspect of prostate cancer, from potential causes to diagnosis, treatments, and innovative means of controlling advanced stages of cancer. It also addresses impotence and incontinence after surgery, tells men what to look for in a surgeon, and features a section on alternative medicine. With an extensive glossary, index, and a listing of where to get help, this comprehensive book is the definitive guide on prostate cancer.

Summary: Guide to Prostate Cancer
Comment: This book was recommended by my urologist & also by a very good friend that has experienced prostate cancer.Even though this book was written in 2001 it has a wealth of up to date information that is easy to understand. I got the book from the library to see if it would help answer the many questions I needed answered after being diagnosed wiyh prostate cancer. It just what I needed, & I decided to find a hardcover copy for myself at amazon.I have done a great deal of research on prostate cancer, online & through books from the library. The Patrick Walsh book is the most informative & I highly recommend to anyone looking for information on prostate cancer.

Summary: GOOD BOOK, SOMEONE PLEASE EDIT IT
Comment: Lots of useful information, and also lots of verbiage.
Does anyone care what surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (I kid you not!!!) is? (page 159, 2007 edition)

It is truly stressful to go through 750 pages when you have a cancer to deal with. Publisher, please do the world a favor and edit this good book to below 250 pages.

Summary: Just diagnosed with Prostate C.
Comment: I bought two books from the local bookstore, this one was the best. It explained all of the technical information that was given to me as part of my biopsy results (Gleason scores, stages, all of the various tables, survivability stats ...). I got more out of it than the time that I spent with my urologist. Plenty of diagrams of the radical surgery I am looking at. Not much on Davinci system which seems to be the current rage. Anyway I found this book to be useful and worth the money.

Summary: Walsh's book is great but not perfect.
Comment: I have read five books on prostate cancer. This is the best of them. However, it is somewhat biased in favor of open surgery (as opposed to laparoscopic, and robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery). Also, some of his data are outdated, e.g., on p. 317 he quotes from a Mayo Clinic study without mentioning that the study was based on 1991-1993, i.e., pre-PSA-era, data, when men were diagnosed with more advanced disease than they are today. However, these are minor flaws in an otherwise excellent book.

Summary: ROY VAUGHAN'S REVIEW
Comment: I FOUND DR. WALSH'S GUIDE TO SURVING PROSTATE CANCER VERY INFORMATIVE.
THE ONLY NEGATIVE COMMENT I WOULD MAKE IS : THAT THE BOOK WAS A 2001 EDITION, WHICH IS QUITE OLD FOR MEDICAL INFORMATION.
