Consumer reviews:
|
Customer Rating: Summary: Good basic writing guide Comment: While neither as thorough as Strunk & White nor as inspiring as many of the good writing books, this is still a handy box of tools ideal for thumbing through and picking up reminders to improve your writing (and reminding you of all the bad writing techniques in this very sentence). Like many books of this type, the author can't help citing examples of his own work. Buy it, keep it by your desk or commode, for finding nuggets to help send you on your writing way.
Customer Rating: Summary: I read it in one subway ride Comment: One of the tips is actually "touch your toes." At other times, the author quotes from his own stories to show examples of "good writing." As another reviewer said, just read the table of contents. This book is dopey and outdated. Perhaps good for middle school-aged aspiring writers, but not really useful or inspiring for experienced/rusty writers.
Customer Rating: Summary: Read the Table of Contents only Comment: This is a good book for the starter writer. He will find good advice here, but he needs to be on a path of daily practice to fully understand what those advices mean.
For intermediate level writers and up, the Table of Contents is enough. It reminds you of the tools of the trade, and then you can pass along and finally stick to what matters: be prepared to write, write, and think about your writing.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Biggest Little Book on Writing I've Ever Read Comment: Before, during, and after writing and publishing my first novel I purchased over fifty books on how to write. I'm always looking for ways to improve my writing skills and during a recent visit to my local bookstore Provost's big little book caught my eye. Big in the sense that it contains a huge amount of information and little in that it does it in only 158 pages. I'm not saying that if I had seen Gary Provost's book first I wouldn't have purchased the others, but I probably wouldn't have felt the need to buy quite so many in-as-much-as Provost has skillfully condensed all of those books into a bare bones delightfully readble tool that I intend to refer to frequently as I write the sequel to my first novel. Provost has touched on the major writing problems that most, if not all, writers face sooner or later--I know I certainly have. I'm glad I discovered this book; it is already dog earred and showing other signs of wear and tear after only three readings. In any event it is a valuable and welcome edition to my writer's library.
