Summary: Great material on reading CXRs--bad material construction of book
Comment: If you are beginning to learn to read chest x-rays, this is the book to read. But is this a book you should buy? . This book will give you a step-by-step approach to reading chest x-rays. By the time you finish reading it, you'll be able to differentiate consolidation from atelectasis and be able to locate the lesions in the correct lung lobes. You'll know the difference between an air bronchogram and a silhouette sign, confidently read a pneumothorax, and know when to use a CT, MRI, or CXR. For beginners, this is the best book with which to start. I should know. I own five introductory books on radiology and this is the one I recommend everyone should read. It only covers reading chest x-rays, but once you've mastered the material in the book, you'll be much more confident going on to other radiology books that cover other parts of the body. Of course, they don't cover everything in this book. You won't be reading fractured thoracic vertebrae or ribs, but what is covered in the book is very good.

The quality of the black and white photographs of the radiographs is very good. When they tell you you can see a mass or fissure in the X-ray, it is indeed viewable. In some other books the quality of the photographic reproductions aren't as good.

Now, I will tell you the downside of the book. The binding is bad. It's both a bad design and poor manufacturing. Within a few minutes of removing the plastic wrap that covered the new book and actually using the book, pages were beginning to come out of the binding. In less than one day of use, the binding was totally detached from the bulk of the book. Only a few pages near the beginning and end of the book were still attached to the book's cover.

I complained to the publisher, Elsevier, but in order to get a new book, I would have to return the damaged book that included all my handwritten notes to myself in the margins.

Be forewarned. The contents of the book are great. The quality of the material of the book is poor.

Other books I like very much include the following:

Pocket Atlas of Sectional Anatomy Volume I, II, III (Publisher Thieme)
Great books to learn cross-sectional anatomy of MRIs. No pathology is included.

Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology 6th Ed
