Editorial Reviews for The Prostate: A Guide for Men and the Women Who Love Them (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)

This year, 200,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. An even greater number will seek help for problems caused by prostate enlargement and inflammation. This book is for them--and for the wives, sisters, and daughters who often take responsibility for educating men about health matters and encouraging them to see a physician. Written by the world-renowned Johns Hopkins surgeon who devised the new, nerve-sparing surgical procedure for treating prostate cancer (generally known as the "Walsh procedure") and an award-winning medical writer, here is an accessible and authoritative resource about the three most common prostate disorders: prostate cancer; benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, commonly known as enlarged prostate); and prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate).

The good news of the book is that effective treatment--and relief of symptoms--is available for all of these disorders. It's especially good to know that prostate cancer, when caught early, is curable. By alleviating men's fears about treatment and assuring them that many men can lead normal, active lives after prostate surgery, the authors hope to encourage men to seek medical attention for their prostate problems and help them to understand the options that are available.

Summary: Have to agree it's getting dated
Comment: I took a very close look at this book while undergoing testing to determine if my high PSA reading at my last physical was due to cancer or not. While I find the author's other book "Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer" which is in it's second edition among the best books out there I noted that some of the material in this book is getting dated and for somone to use this book as their primary source of information on the subject of prostate disorders would be denying themselves of a lot of information vital to making a wise decision. If a new revised edition of this book were to be relased I have no doubt that it could be a very good reference. If you are looking for up to date information to help guide you through some possibly difficult decisions save your money and look at other titles.

Summary: A helpful book, Prostate a guide for men, Fred Felkins husband of Joan Felkins
Comment: This book was refered to me when I was told that I told that I had Prostate cancer by a doctor. The doctor informed me that most men do not understand what the prostate does and how it operates. I read the book and achieved a better understanding of what I was facing. My wife did not read the entire book but did read certain parts and used this to support me in this time. I would recommend that every man over 50 beg, borrow or buy this book, read it, study it and visit with their doctor and get a yearly check up. I am a five year survial of Prostate cancer and every 6 months when the doctor tells me that it is still in remission I rejoice.
