Editorial Reviews for Governing Health: the Politics of Health Policy

Despite widespread perceptions to the contrary, health care reform in the United States has blossomed since 1965--molded in large part by changes in the nation's chief political institutions. But until now, there has been little attempt to look at health care policymaking from a long-term political perspective. Governing Health does just that.

Drawing on political science research on the institutions of government and the policy process, Governing Health explains how health policy is made. It describes how the Congress, the president, special interest groups, bureaucracy, and state governments affect the process of defining health policy problems and finding politically feasible solutions. It also provides an extensive review of the policies that have governed health care for a generation or more, starting with the passage of Medicare in 1965 and continuing through the national health care debate of 1993-94.

"Sociologists and economists have authored or contributed to a small number of worthy volumes bringing their disciplines' perspectives to the topic of health politics and policy," write the authors, and "while they have much to offer, a gap remains. Politics is more than the sociology of institutions or economic self-interest. Health care policy is politics at its richest and fullest."

"The Weisserts have done a splendid job. This is a first rate book; comprehensive, intelligently organized, even-handed, analytically satisfying, historically grounded, fast-moving, and smart. It is easily the best health policy book I have seen."--James A. Morone, former editor, Journal of Health Politics, Policy, and Law

Summary: Easy Read that Explains How Policy is Made
Comment: I am taking a course in Health Policy and the Political System and opted to use this book instead of that recommended by my professor. This book examined all the important aspects of policy making - paying close attention to the political actors - and has helped tremendously in my understanding of the politics surrounding health policy.

Summary: Best book in print on the health policy process
Comment: I have used this book for a number of years now in a class I teach on the Politics of Health Policy (along with Kingdon's classic). It provides an excellent overview of how health policy is made and the politics around it, drawing on both the academic literature as well as recent policies. The second edition is heavily revised from the first and contains up to date examples. An excellent academic overview of the health policy process.

Summary: A Look at Health Policy from a Political Science Perspective
Comment: This book takes a comprehensive look at health policy in the U.S. from a political science perspective. It addresses all the institutional influences of health policy, such as Congress, the President, interest groups, regulatory agencies, and federalism. It also addresss prominent political science theories and relates them to health policy.

This book is a must-read for any health professional or student who would like to explore the how health policy is REALLY developed. I also highly recommend this book to social scientists and students who are interested in applying governmental relationships to health policy.
