Editorial Reviews for The Defiant Child: A Parent's Guide to Oppositional Defiant Disorder

The American Psychiatric Association estimates that sixteen percent of children in the United States may have oppositional defiant disorder. These kids relentlessly push the boundaries set for them by authority figures. By exploring the mindset of O.D.D. children and explaining the way they operate, Dr. Douglas Riley teaches parents how to recognize the signs and modify the behavior of their O.D.D.

Summary: parent of a add and odd teenager
Comment: This book was recommended by a counselor we bought two copies it pretty much described our child. The book is no magic cure but it gives you a lot of ideas that sure help and you'll see a lot of kids are like yours. I recommend it its not much money and it does help. Good Luck

Summary: AMAZING
Comment: This book is a very easy read. I was amazed while reading this book at how well this author seemed to know my son (maybe I should be receiving royalties) :). I have changed my views on my son and my own behaviors that increase his disruptive behaviors. I have already started implementing many of the strategies with my son and have seen a complete turn around with him and my entire household. Anyone who is exposed to a disruptive child should read this book. I have always loved my child but now I actually like him and don't have to dread coming home to whatever he may have in store for me.

Summary: Great Doable Parenting Skills
Comment: This book was a very easy read. It was very insightful and had a lot of useful information when dealing with a defiant child. All of the parenting advise was doable and very adaptive.

Summary: Informative Read
Comment: The descriptions of the ODD child's view of the world were quite insightful. I also liked the idea of holding children accountable for their actions, something that doesn't seem to happen enough. However, I have a feeling that most parents will balk at the extremes they will have to go to in order to get their child to change. They may intellectually understand what needs to be done, but if people had the stamina to enforce such consequences in the first place, there wouldn't be so many ODD children needing help. Still, a very informative book that I will recommend to others.

Summary: A must for raising teenagers
Comment: This book became my "bible" for raising my teenage daughter. All parents of teenagers should read this book!
