Summary: Written by a Robot
Comment: First, this $189 book came in a battered package from Amazon.com, with the first three pages torn. It describes how to inject local anesthetic/steroid mixtures in almost every part of the body. The big problem I have with this book is the overwhelming amount of repitition. It is obvious the author stored whole sections in a word processor and added them to every single chapter where applicable. For example, the wording of each chapter on injection of trigger points is copied verbatim each time, except for the anatomic description of the area in mention, and the needle placement. Each chapter ends with a section called "clinical pearls" - there appear to be a total of three of them, again reproduced endlessly via word processor. Two thirds of the text could have been cut out without the loss of any clinical information - maybe the price could have been cut by 2/3rds. as well? Finally, there are several pictures which are irrelevant to the subject of the chapter, and one instance where an X-ray of a knee is substituted for an X-ray of an elbow! (page 180) - didn't anyone proof-read this book before publication? Disappointing and overpriced.

Summary: Excellent office reference
Comment: For each diagnosis "indications and Clinical Considerations", "Clinically Relevant Anatomy", "Technique", "Side Effects and Complications" and "Clinical Pearls" are given. These are somewhat limited in scope, but certainly present anough information to help refresh clinicians knowledge and help them educate their patients.
Also, there are always injection techniques that escape immediate memory. Procedures not performed in a while can easily be caught up on through this text. The illustrations and technical info is good. One area that might be somewhat lacking is in diagnosis. Some attention is paid to other potential diagnoses, but this is quite limited. Howeverm, it is clearly not the intention of this bbok to be comprehensive ortho-neuro-physiatric pain textbook. It is an atlas only.
Anyone looking to have a atlas of local injections will be gald this text is on their shelf.

Comment: This is a light hearted, nicely written, very well illustrated book. It presents many practical clinical conditions and approach then in a systematic but a simple way. Interesting to rheumatologists, anaesthetists, orthopaedic surgeons and pain clinicians, it make for a very enjoyable reading.
